"Donde Crecen las Enredaderas" (Where Vines Grow) is an illustrated book developed over two years as part of my Master’s thesis for the Master’s Degree in Design and Illustration at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

The project is grounded in an in-depth analysis of the situation of immigrant women in Spain, explored through four key frameworks: Human Rights, Feminism, Interculturality, and Intersectionality.

Combining research and visual storytelling, the book was conceived as a design-driven tool to promote awareness and education around women’s rights and migration. It features two main sections: a didactic, infographic-based introduction explaining the four core themes, followed by a series of personal testimonies from immigrant women, allowing readers to understand each story through these conceptual lenses.

The Challenge

The challenge was to translate complex and sensitive social issues into an accessible, engaging, and visually compelling format.

This required balancing rigorous research (including statistical data and survey analysis) with a human-centered narrative approach. The goal was to create a piece that informs without overwhelming, and that invites reflection without losing clarity or emotional connection.

Results

The result is an illustrated publication that merges information design with storytelling, creating a cohesive and meaningful reading experience.

By structuring the content into both educational and narrative sections, the book encourages readers to engage critically with each testimony while providing them with the tools to better understand the broader social context.

Key Takeaways

  • Design can be a powerful tool for education and social awareness
  • Combining data with storytelling creates deeper emotional and intellectual engagement
  • Addressing complex topics requires both sensitivity and clarity in communication
